U.S. Civics & Citizenship Education

The U.S. Civics & Citizenship Education is a standards-based program that uses a content-based approach to help students and adults acquire academic language skills through the study of civics education. The program covers the US Civics and English Language standards required for students at the Middle and High School levels.

The purpose of the program is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, values, and dispositions of active and informed citizens while they develop English language literacy skills. The program enhances students’ basic understanding of geography and U.S. history. Problem-solving activities and cooperative learning techniques are provided to help develop the participatory skills necessary for students to become active, responsible citizens. The program utilizes effective forms of learning, such as:

   • Active learning: emphasizing learning by doing.

   • Interactive learning: using discussion and debate.

   • Relevant learning: focusing on real-life issues facing young people and society.

   • Critical thinking learning: encouraging young people to think for themselves.
